Gyproc modern plasterboards provide high quality linings that are available in a broad range of types and sizes, allowing the selection of exactly the right product for each application.

Standard plasterboards are commonly used to finish property interiors. We have a good selection of these boards, finished with taperred edges or straight edges.

The boards are available in a variety of sizes and thickness's. Dimensions include 0.6m x 2.4m; 0.9m x 1.8m; and 1.2m x 2.4m. Thickness's include 12.5mm; 15mm; and 19mm.

Gypsum plasterboard with a higher density core. Gyproc SoundBloc consists of an aerated gypsum core encased in, and
firmly bonded to, strong paper liners. Gyproc SoundBloc is a plasterboard that is suitable for drylining internal surfaces.

Gyproc SoundBloc is designed for use in British Gypsum wall and partition systems where greater levels of sound insulation
are required.

Product Characteristics and Performance

Plasterboard is basically an inner layer of gypsum sandwiched between two outer layers of lining paper including various additives in the gypsum layer and varying the weight and strength of the lining paper, will give the finished board different properties

Gypsum is made up of crystals containing a small amount of water (known as water of crystallisation). In a fire, this water is driven-off, helping to keep the temperature of the fire down, and preventing rapid fire spread. Plasterboards, such as Gyproc FireLine, are therefore used extensively for fire protection proving up to 4 hours protection in some special multi-layer system applications.

Most common plasterboards come with the option of either tapered edge or square edge. Tapered edge boards are ideal for either jointing or skimming, while square edge is generally used for textured finishes.

Most standard plasterboard has one ivory face and one brown. The liner on the ivory face is specially designed for plastering plaster should not be applied to the brown reverse face. Paper liners are generally made from recycled paper a big plus for the environment.

The importance of providing adequate and effective fire protection in buildings cannot be over emphasised. It is crucial that the fire protection requirements for a building are identified and incorporated to ensure that occupants are able to escape the building safely in the event of fire. Gyproc plasterboards can contribute to providing the required fire performance.

Acoustic performance

Noise in buildings is not only a nuisance factor but can also significantly reduce comfort and efficiency. Building Regulations Approved Document Part E stipulates minimum levels of acoustic performance for all residential buildings. Areas of other buildings are often specified as having higher levels of acoustic privacy depending on the type of building, location within the building and type of occupancy. Plasterboard is good for cutting down noise transmission particularly airborne sounds such as speech and music. High performance plasterboards, such as Gyproc SoundBloc, have a specially designed core that provides even better insulation against sound.

With performance levels up to Class A sound absorption and up to 30 minutes fire resistance, ceilings can meet the demands of BB93, national Building Regulations Approved Document E, HBN 00-10 and HTM 08-01, making them ideal for domestic properties, schools, high-rise multi-occupancy buildings, healthcare buildings, as well as offices and retail premises.

Moisture performance

Plasterboard is good for cutting down noise transmission particularly airborne sounds such as speech and music. High performance plasterboards, such as Gyproc SoundBloc, have a specially designed core that provides even better insulation against sound.

Certain buildings or areas of buildings require extra moisture protection. Gyproc plasterboards can contribute to providing extra moisture resistance.
Gyproc FireLine with water repellent additives in the core, encased in a special pink paper liner. Used in British Gypsum wall and partition systems where both fire protection and moisture resistance are required.

Whilst standard plasterboard is ideal for most environments, it shouldn't be used in constantly wet conditions. For kitchens, bathrooms and similar wet areas, Gyproc Moisture Resistant, specially designed with silicone additives in the core.

Thermal performance

Heat loss from buildings can mean lower comfort conditions and results in higher fuel bills. Building Regulations Approved Document Part L stipulates minimum levels of thermal performance for external walls, roofs and floors in almost all types of new and some existing buildings. Gyproc thermal laminates are available in a wide choice of product options meaning that specified U Values can be met.

Technical Data

The thermal properties of building materials and building elements are defined most commonly by terms and symbols as described below:

Thermal conductivity (λ - Lambda value)

(l) This is a measure of a material’s ability to transmit heat, and is expressed as heat flow in watts per m2 of surface area for temperature gradient of one Kelvin (K) per metre thickness. It is expressed as W/mK.

Generally, dense materials have high thermal conductivity and are inefficient thermal insulants, whereas lightweight materials have low conductivity and can be efficient thermal insulants.

The lower the (λ - thermal conductivity) value of a material, the better is its insulating efficiency.

Thermal resistance (R)

This is the measure of the resistance to the passage of heat offered by the thickness of a material and is expressed as m2K/W.

The thermal resistance of a material is obtained by the following calculation ...

R = t (thickness in metres) divided by λ (thermal conductivity)

The higher the resistance of the element the better is its insulating efficiency.

Thermal transmittance (U Value)

The U Value of a building element is a property of its whole construction, including airspaces, and is the measure of its ability to transmit heat under steady state conditions. It is calculated by adding the reciprocal sum of all the individual thermal resistances and is expressed as W/m2K.

The lower the U Value of the element, the better its thermal insulation properties.


Product Installation

It is important to observe appropriate health and safety legislation when working on site i.e. personal protective clothing and equipment, etc. The following notes are intended as general guidance only. In practice, consideration must be given to design criteria requiring specific project solutions.

Handling

Manual off-loading of this product should be carried out with care to avoid unnecessary strain. For further information please refer to the Manual Handling section of the 'Site Book' or 'Manual Handling Guide', available to download from www.british-gypsum.com

Cutting

This product may be cut using a plasterboard saw or by scoring with a sharp knife and snapping the board over a straight edge. Holes for switch or socket boxes should be cut out before the boards are fixed using a utility saw or sharp knife. When cutting boards, power and hand tools should be used with care and in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations. Power tools should only be used by people who have been instructed and trained to use them safely. Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used.

Fixing

Fix boards with decorative side out to receive joint treatment or a skim plaster finish. Lightly butt boards together. Never force boards into position. Install fixings not closer than 13mm from cut edges and 10mm from bound edges. Position cut edges to internal angles whenever possible, removing paper burrs with fine sandpaper. Stagger horizontal and vertical board joints between layers by a minimum of 600mm. Locate boards to the centre line of framing where this supports board edges or ends.
